Attack in Paris: Was it a Result of Western Imperialism? (RELS 348)

For my second blog I have chosen an article by T.J. Petrowski titled “Attack in Paris a Direct Result of Western Imperialism,” Dissident Voice, 8 January 2015. As the title implies Petrowski discusses how the recent shooting of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris is a direct result of Western imperialism and it’s interventions in the Middle East. Within the first half of the article Petrowski discusses how the recent shooting in Paris is not the only result of Western Imperialism but is one of many as he also mentions events such as the attacks on 9/11 and the London bombing. In the second half of the article Petrowski discusses how the attack in Paris will result in two things. First it will be used as a pretext for further restrictions of civil liberties and more violent imperialist interventions abroad. Second the shooting will also serve as justification to continue the “war on terror” abroad. The reason I chose this article is because I believe it relates well to our study of imperialism.

I believe Petrowski provides a good argument when addressing how the attack in Paris was result of Western Imperialism. Many would agree that the actions of Islamic extremists are acts of terrorism and simply crimes against humanity. It should be kept in mind though that the aggressive nature and force used by extremists is not something that has come about spontaneously. As Petrowski states in his article Western imperialist have continuously violated the national sovereignty and the right to self-determination of every country in the Middle East and North Africa in the last 50 years. This constant intervention and oppression by the West can be attributed as the spark to many of the conflicts between the different religious groups and ideologies found in the middle East. With this being said I would have to agree with Petrowski and his argument that the attack on Charlie Hebdo can be attributed to Western Imperialism and it’s interventions in the middle East over the years.
