Attack on Canadians by the ISIS

Attack on Canadians by the ISIS

On September 21st, 2014 Stephen Harper – Canada’s Prime Minister released an audio tape that states that ISIS will be attacking Canadians that do not “believe.” Canadians are being targeted because of there alliance with the United States of America. The article states “Unlike other terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, ISIS has established a widespread presence on social networks, using highly produced videos and audio recordings in an effort to recruit new fighters from abroad and intimidate those opposed to their murderous agenda” (CBC News). Technology these days make it extremely easy for terrorist organizations to threaten citizens, implant beliefs, and recruit believers; the main reason how Abu Mohammad al-Adnani created the audio tape and uploaded onto Twitter. He has also created multiple beheading videos that have been posted onto Youtube of James Foley, Stephen Sotloff, and David Haines.

There is five pillars of Islam which Muslims practice. The five pillars are: Shahada (testifying to one god), Salat (Prayer), Zakat (giving charity), Sawm (fasting), Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). If you are an extremist you practice all of these plus a sixth pillar which is known as “Jihad.” Jihad is where an individual needs to struggle within, and spread the message of Allah (God) to the world around them, often involving violence to spread this message.

Americans and Canadians have been fighting the Islamic state for almost a decade now, which has cost hundreds of soldier there lives in 2003 when America invaded Iraq. According to the audio tape Adnani states “If you fight it [Islamic State], it becomes stronger and tougher. If you leave it alone, it grows and expands” (CBC News). The Islamic State – Jihad is growing rapidly and spreading like wild fire, and American and Canadian officials are in a rut of what needs to be done to stop it. ISIS is threatening to attack and Canada isn’t ready to just stand there.

  1. In regards to your first paragraph where you mention the use of technology by ISIS, I agree that this new tactic creates a dramatic increase in how dangerous this group has the potential to be. Not only are they gaining new members in their area to cause terror, but they are now able to recruit members from across the globe much faster with just a simple video post.

As per your comments about the involvement with fighting ISIS in the Islamic state, I agree that if Canada does nothing then the most likely outcome will be the growth of ISIS but in order to make sure that this does not happen, I believe that it must be a joint effort of many nations to demolish this group, not just Canada.

Very informative blog on the threat of an attack on Canada!

  2. I think this is a good thing that Canada wants to take action and not just stand there while their Country and allies are threatened. Of course this is a very difficult situation and there is no proper way to go about it, at least we are making an effort to find a way to cease the attack of the ISIS.

Using social media to recruit and frighten the population is a smart tactic. Before social media there would be no way the ISIS and their ultimatum would be as big and well known as it is today. Their threat is a great example of how when someone has such a strong belief in something they will go to great lengths to accomplish what they suppose is right.
